in 2011, BMW unveiled a feature-length trailer in the guise of the 1 Series M Coupé but resisted the customer-driven urge to make it a proper volume addition to the M model line-up.

Two years later we got the next best thing: the M235i, a car based on the then-new 2 Series and breathed on heavily by M division. We like it very much. But the real thing it conspicuously wasn’t, even after it was reworked slightly and called the M240i.

Now though, with the 2 Series very much a separate entity – and the awkward nomenclature problem encountered by the 1M fixed – the kosher version lands.

As a flagship, it fits the billing. Flagrantly muscular in the arches (in likeable contrast to the M240i), unmistakably succinct (in likeable contrast to the M4) and undoubtedly butch underneath (it’s 30bhp more powerful than the 1M), the M2 appears to be the machine we were after.

When realised in 2017 at £46,430 it was by far the cheapest way into the bona fide M car range.

It’s crucial, then, the smallest, most affordable M car underwrites the anticipatory excitement with actual performance prowess.

We belive as this car gets older the more appreciated it will become seeing as the newly realised BMW M3 is now the same size as the e39 m5 was.

If you are looking for a small “light” drivers car in the M devision this is their best option, After driving one it will be hard to look at the m3 in the same way again! Our example has a Scorpion down-pipe fitted and a stage 2 map which puts this car well over 400 bhp with a throaty soundtrack to match

The Club is proud to offer this BMW E39 M5 in a highly desired colour combination.

This example has full service history. A very mechanically sound car having oil changes every 5000 miles since new. Owned by BMW enthusiasts have kept this car driving amazingly and is ready for its next owner to cherish.

The E39 M5 arrived in 1999 for the 2000 model year, marking the first V-8 engine to be used in an M production car. And what an engine it is. The 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V-8—internally referred to as the S62—makes 394 hp at 6600 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm. It is a righteous screamer of an engine right up to its 7000-rpm redline, and it could haul the stately German sled from 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds. With its variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust cams, as well as individual throttle bodies for its octet of cylinders, this is among the finest engines ever to leave Munich’s hallowed halls.

But the M5 isn’t just all ate up with motor. The only transmission available was a six-speed manual—a beefed-up version of the unit found in the BMW 540i. Even today the chassis feels stout and athletic, despite a touch of body roll. The interior is handsome, purposeful, and assembled with high-quality leather, wood, and plastic. The seats hug your love handles with firm, reassuring support. In 2000, Car and Driver called it “the most desirable sedan in the world.”

Simply put, this was the elite-level sport sedan on planet Earth from 2000-2003. The Mercedes E55 AMG was admittedly a mean hot-rod, but it didn’t have the refinement of the M5. And the Audi RS6 was indeed a force to be reckoned with, but it was hampered by comparatively heavy curb weight (and much lower production volume).
